Sugar Taxes Win!
Over the past year or so we have seen in the U.K. and some cities in America the introduction of so called “”soda taxes.”
The purpose of these taxes has been to some degree to address the growing problems of obesity in the world and the dirt link between that obesity and the consumption of sugar.
Of course there has been much gnashing of teeth and temper tantrum displays as a result but all of them have been by the sugar industry so no-one really cares!
In most cases the taxes raised have not only seen remarkable reductions in sugar intakes but also unprecedented amounts of funding going to communities that suffer most from obesity related ailments.
In other words the low income areas where the sugar industry likes most to prey upon people are getting the benefits of those taxes directly.
In the past big sugar tried to point to their grants to these areas as cause for us all to consider them to be the nice guys in the story.
But as the figures begin to roll in it is clear that the amounts of money going into these communities through the taxes is making those sugar industry grants look like pocket change.
How Will You Die?
OK, I am the type of person that likes to go with the odds on things.
I am also the kind of person that although I like a pleasant surprise, I don’t like unpleasant ones.
So when it comes to my inevitable demise I would prefer to know at eats as much as I can, roughly how the whole thing is going to go down and when.
As you can probably imagine, when you follow along with the world of health, fitness and wellbeing you are hit with a seemingly endless barrage of information.
There is always a latest diet, a latest exercise routine, a latest food that is going to make you live forever and one that is going to kill you.
I am certainly not saying that this information is useless but what I do know is that it can get pretty overwhelming at times!
So this week I came across an article on something I have reported on before in the field of exercise and how it relates to health.
Yes there are all sorts of exercise routines around and new ones coming out daily but there is one simple basic the continues and has the science to back it up.
If you want to lose weight and give yourself the best chance at health through a fitness routine then all you have to do is move.
It really does boil down to that one point.
You can do all sorts of things and go through all sorts of complications but at the end of the day all you have to do is regularly move.
Apart from these weekly updates on the world of food and health the actual mainstay of this site is devoted to an explanation of acne.
Acne is one of those conditions that has been around to some degree for a long time and in recent years has been becoming more and more prevalent.
It is also one of those conditions that the medicos continually futz around with and make numerous authoritative pronouncement on but in the end never really get anywhere with it.
All they really have is a routine of resorting to stronger and stronger treatments.
Personally I think acne falls into the exact same category as a host of other modern ailments that continue to prove elusive to the medical profession.
I think it comes down to a lifestyle problem and its source could probably be traced to any number of factors in our lives.
Mostly I think it is diet but again, that is simplifying the situation a little too much.
One thing that is known is that most cases are the result of a final stage of hormonal imbalance followed by an overproduction of sebum in the sweat glands resulting in pimples and acne.
The elusive factor is always what caused the imbalance in the first place.
One of the most common specific imbalances is the result of an overproduction of insulin.
So if your insulin levels are bouncing around there will be a tendency towards acne so… to cut a long story short.
If you are suffering from acne why not try to control your insulin level a little through diet?
Can’t hurt really!
Let the Confusion Reign!
Ok, this week on Food Babe the author of that blog highlighted the use of a chemical compound in processed foods that has been linked to increases in human food allergies.
The name of the product is TBHQ and its use is widespread.
Now what followed is a great example of why our food sources have become so compromised and why getting any action in this area descends into confusion and emotion so quickly.
The original article cites a study done that showed the way in which TBHQ has been linked to allergies and more specifically how it has been linked.
All good so far.
Food Babe then goes on to inform her readers that TBHQ is a form of butane which is the same butane that is used in lighters.
She then goes on to list other studies where TBHQ has been found to cause problems.
At the same time an image from her site was going viral immediately triggering responses from all the usual suspects in the food industry and Snopes.com.
Food Babe’s error and the thing that allowed her to be open to attack was the whole butane thing and the food industry and others wasted no time jumping on that to discredit the entire story.
Not only that but it caused such a keffuffle that Smopes.com got in on the act and using rather dubious means marked the whole thing as a “myth.”
Because of the butane thing.
TBHQ is a man made chemical compound that is used in tiny amounts as an anti-oxidant in processed foods.
Its action is to prevent the food from going bad and although a number of bodies have reported it as dangerous it is definitely not the same as butane.
Saying it is, is like saying a hydrogen balloon and a hydrogen bomb are basically the same because they both have hydrogen!
Of course Snopes then consulted the current FDA ruling on it which of course gives it the all-clear based on the assumption that the FDA has a perfect track record in identifying dangerous goods!
So you see by this point the whole thing has descended into a “he said – she said” debacle and the debate has gone totally off target.
And that is why it is so hard to get things done in the world of food.

No Convincing Needed Here!
Apparently there was a study done in Greece that found a midday map was effective in lowering blood pressure in adults.
Personally I don’t really need a study to take a nap how ever if anyone does challenge me on my right to nap during the day I now have scientific evidence… which is a good thing.
Age Reversal Research
So first of all don’t be put off from reading this article because it is all “sciency” and hard to understand.
It is actually a fascinating look into the world of research especially in the field of aging and where it may go in the future.
Of particular interest is the example of a species of jellyfish which is to all intents and purposes, immortal.
When the adult jellyfish begins to display too many signs of ageing or becomes too ill to continue it simply resets all its cells to an immature state, reverts to that state and then… kind of regrows up again back to adult stage.
How cool would that be!
Everything Old is New Again
A long time ago in a world far removed from where we are today, the way to wash your hands was to use soap.
Sadly in that world the companies that made the soap were trapped in a cycle of needing ever increasing expansion and profits to make their evil overlords, the shareholders, happy.
The bosses of those companies were worried but late in the day when all seemed lost the marketing department came to the rescue.
They invented the idea that the world was crawling with nasty, death inducing germs and bacteria and that only a heartless mother or father would subject their family to such as obvious danger.
This message was repeated over and over in the media until everyone considered it to be true.
Hence the soap companies got to sell lots and lots of anti-bacterial soap and a new sector of their industry was born.
And the shareholders saw that it was good.
Same goes for mouth wash as well!
Anyhoo a few years back people started to ask what it was in those soaps that was supposed to be so anti-bacterial.
Then the bad news began to roll in, apparently not only was the soap anti-bacterial, it was also a little anti-human and had a nasty habit of making them sick.
The bad news continued and continued up until today when many of those products had to be removed from the shelves due to being a tad toxic.
You see the reality is, and this has been proven in labs over and over, that the original soap everyone was using has always been more effective at removing bacteria and germs from the hands than any fancy-pants anti-bacterial preparations. Doh!
