You Want Antibiotics with that?
Last year FoodBabe ran a pretty successful campaign against Subway on the topic of their addition of a rather nasty plasticizer to their bread products.
The substance in question is called azodicarbonamide and is the same chemical they add to various plastic products to make them sort of spongy for want of a better description.
As is the case in the food industry at some point someone decided to see what happened if you added it to bread dough and hey presto!
It gave the bread a soft spongier texture that the execs at Subway thought was awesome!
You just can’t make this stuff up!
Anyhoo she called them out on it and the myriad of studies showing that adding this particular substance to any food was a really, really bad idea and eventually they caved in and removed it.
I guess at the time they thought that at least that annoying woman was going to be out of their hair from now on.
Sadly (for them) no!
She’s back and launching into them again on another topic that is equally as horrific.
The concept that regularly dosing farm animals with antibiotics for no reason other than you increase yields just reeks of trouble.
How is it that these people can just do this stuff without thought for the future?
The inherent dangers are that the antibiotics make their way through the food chain to you and I but the real danger is far greater.
We already live in a world where the overuse and incorrect use of antibiotics has led to various superbugs that are resistant to the antibiotics we have.
You only have to ask someone working at a hospital that has been exposed to Golden Staph to understand this.
This endless exposure of the population unnecessarily to antibiotics makes these superbugs possible and most likely cause them.
We have to get behind any push to get these things out of the food chain before even the most innocuous infections and diseases become resistant to antibiotics and put us all at risk.
8 Facts About Food That Will Totally Creep You Out
Fun Soda Facts to Scare the Kids With!
Every year with an increasingly disturbing frequency the makes of sweetened soda drinks come out with study after study showing their soft drinks are completely innocent when it comes to our health.
Of course they pay for those studies to be done so it really comes as no surprise that that findings are what they are!
With an equal amount of regularity independent studies come out showing us that those sugary soft drinks are not what we think they are and are actually having a devastating effect on our health and the health of our children and future generations.
So, just to keep things brief in case you were beginning to waiver on the subject here is a quick list of what you can expect to go wrong if you take the advice of Big Soda!
I am always suspicious of established medical studies that come out and openly dismiss the value of supplements.
On the other hand I am also suspicious of the miracle results that many supplements are said to provide.
To me the best way to get your vitamins or whatever is through a well sourced, well balanced diet.
However that is not always possible and I think supplements have their place as long as you remember they are called SUPPLEMENTS for a reason!
This recent study tested out the effectiveness of fish oil supplements as opposed to just eating the right fish in the first place and the result were kind of unsurprising.
The use of supplements had no effect on the study group at all.
I don’t think this can be used as an example for all supplements but at least when it comes to the benefits of eating seafood regularly the best thing is to eat seafood regularly.
Before we go too far into this subject let me make one thing clear here.
I am not a person that advocates a total sugar ban as is the current fashion regarding that subject at the moment.
Like any health issue that is diet based the extremes of the subject tend to get the most attention and in this case it is not different.
Big soda and the corn syrup industry finance study after study that (surprise!) shows NO adverse effect from sugared products.
According to them it’s the fault of those fat lazy people that don’t exercise enough!
At the other end of the scale we have those that advocate a total sugar ban and that the the source of all modern ills is sugar.
Clearly the truth, and a workable one at that, must lie somewhere in between.
Personally I loves me some sweet things!
The real problem here is finding out what is causing what and in a world that tends to deal only in direct effects that can be hard.
Right now there is another growing health concern sweeping the world like a cheesy boy band pop song and that is insulin resistance.
The role of insulin is to cause the cells to take up excess sugar in the blood stream on the orders of the pancreas.
It is this system between the liver the pancreas and the use of insulin that a steady blood sugar level is achieved.
When there is too much sugar the liver is told to stop producing it and the pancreas is told to produce insulin to get the levels down. Simple really!
However an increasing number of people are reporting with indications of insulin resistance meaning that although their insulin levels go up to reduce the blood sugar levels, no one seems to be listening!
The question is why is this happening and why now.
To me it seems kind of simple really.
If you keep bypassing the liver as the main source of sugar production after food digestion then you are already throwing confusion into the mix.
Remember that sugar added to food goes directly into the bloodstream bypassing an entire system of processing.
So if you keep elevating the sugar levels to ridiculous amounts on a regular basis, and the pancreas responds by endlessly producing insulin, it seems inevitable to me that in the end the whole system will go awry.
The continual presence of insulin trying to counteract ever present levels of excessive sugar will lead to the insulin being less and less effective over time.
No one has really nailed down the causes yet but here are the main suspects:
- Too much sugar in it’s pure form rather than sugar created by the body itself.
- Lack of physical movement causing the carriage of endocrine system factors to be sluggish and relient only on heart pressure.
- A disruption to or an inadequate gut microbes.
Coffee Creamer Horror!
I have never used these fake coffee creamer things in my life.
Sometimes something just looks so bad, so suspicious that there is a large and very loud bell going off in you head saying that you should not engage with this product.
And in the case of coffee creamer that bell is totally right.
If you have ever been tempted to use it or have been uncertain about it then click the link below to allow the true horror to unfold.
Yes that stuff looks fake but that is only the tip of the iceberg!

More on Supplements
Keeping in line with the subject of taking supplements somewhere else on this page here is a more reasoned approach to the subject.
As I said in that other post, the key to understanding supplements is that they are called supplements for a very good reason.
They are supposed to be supplementary to an already well balanced and healthy diet.
They are not replacements.
In fact unless you are taking supplements in conjunction with a good diet the majority of them will just pass on through you without touching the sides.
