Get up Stand up!
Whilst the health industry wants us all to buy into the idea that diet and exercise are the keys to a healthy life the reality is turning out to be a little different.
Unfortunately for them this new reality is cutting down on the number of products they can market to us but I have no concern for their well being, they will think of something!
It turns out the real message on the exercise end of the scale is not actually exercise!
To be precise the real key word here is “movement” and at it’s lowest level all you need to do is stand up!
You see the real enemy here is not a lack of exercise.
The real enemy has to do with your ancestry and it goes a little like this.
Sitting seems to be a long held sign used by the body to indicate that at this time all metabolic processes must stop because we are conserving energy.
This saved energy for when it was time to spend it.
However what that system is not designed to do is tolerate long, extended periods of just sitting, like we do, all day. at a desk.
Now, after a long period of sitting when we stand and move, the body is in such an unconscious state the movement has little effect and it takes forever for the body to get back up to pace.
The results of tests done on this concept have shown that people with pretty much the same diet and exercise can suffer from widely different weight levels and the less you sit means the thinner you will be.
In fact if you were to spend 120 minutes per day less sitting you would burn an extra 350 calories.
That’s not 350 calories due to exercise, that’s 350 calories just because you were standing up!

Get Out There and Get Dirty!
A few years back now my son was beginning his journey through the Faustien levels of hell that we loosely call the education system.
Due to that I had the opportunity to come into contact with other parents and was at first rather surprised by this breed of animal.
What I found was the biggest bunch of nervous nellies I had ever encountered.
I based a lot of my child’s upbringing on my own because I figured I hadn’t turned out too badly and had in fact managed to survive long enough to reach maturity and procreate so there had to be something right in there!
So I encouraged my son to play as he saw fit and only exercised restraint when he was clearly endangering himself.
I let him fall off his bike so he learned not to do so.
I let him run as fast as he could until he fell flat on his face so that he learned how not to do that… it all seemed rather sensible to me.
The other parents however seemed to see things differently.
The frowned upon running fast and screamed incessantly for the child not to fall over until eventually the child fell over.
Then they would scream, “See? I told you that would happen!”
Of course from that point forward running with abandon was kind of out of the question.
This wrapping them up in cotton wool thing really kicked into gear when it came to coming into contact with nature.
Apparently dirt was never to be touched, bugs, insects dog whatever were similarly off limits and hands needed to be washed whenever there was time to do so.
Of course that meant that hands were washed almost non-stop all day everyday!
As all of this progressed through the years there was one thing I noticed.
The other kids seemed to be always coming down with colds, my son never had colds and in fact he is seventeen now and he has had about three colds in his life and nothing else of any note.
My theory is that he was allowed to come into contact with the world around him and became immune to some degree to it.
The other kids did not.

Diets, Diets, Diets
Year after year we seem to head into yet another diet that is going to somehow change the game and make us all live until we are 100 years old.
Or maybe remain cancer free, or have the body of a goddess (or god, depending on what you started with!) or make us irresistible to the opposite sex or whatever.
One of the ones that always made me laugh was the Mediterranean diet!
As if somehow this was some kind of created thing that was the result of some kind of testing or study.
I laughed because you see in the Mediterranean they don’t call it a diet, they just call it food, it’s just what they eat!
I am sure many Spaniards and Greeks were rolling about on the floor laughing at people paying money to learn what they eat and expecting some kind of miracle from it.
The truth is that what we call the Mediterranean diet is simply an eating lifestyle that is practiced based on the food that is available in the area, like I said, it’s what they eat!
Anyway the reality is that one of the reasons the diet is actually good for you is the simple fact that it is based on fresh food in sensible proportions and an absolute minimum of modern processed garbage that a lot of us eat.
In a recent study medicos were totally unsurprised to find that cancer levels in people eating like this were significantly lower than those on a western diet.
What they did find interesting and will be the subject of further study is that by adding more extra virgin olive oil to and already oil rich diet seems to have reduced the incidence of breast cancer.
The existing study is not being taken as absolute fact at this point but has piqued the interest of many scientists around the world.
