I live in a country where at the first sign of the slightest sniffle everyone immediately rushes off to the doctor demanding some kind of medicine to cure it.
Despite the medical profession’s best efforts to educate the public that there is no “cure” for a cold and that antibiotics are useless the still come under pressure to provide them.
They also know if they refuse the person will just go to the next doctor along the street until they get it.
It is strange for me to see this because where I grew up the idea that a siffle would trigger an doctor’s visit was considered just ridiculous!
In fact going to the doctor required the situation to be pretty dramatic at the least and at a bare minimum you needed to be drifting towards unconsciousness!
Anyway my mum had a bunch of home remedies used for such non-life threatening events so below is an article that gathers a few together.
Using Essential Oils
Another key video from AwakenWithJP this week and the subject in question is essential oils.
I think we can all agree that JP really takes us into the heart of the subject and explains in exact scientific terms exactly why there amazing oils are so good for us.
Most channels on YouTube covering the subject of a spiritual life are just what they say, spiritual.
However when it comes to JP things really take off up on to another level because let’s face it, it’s right there in the title… ultra spiritual.
You know if it’s in the title it must be true.
Winning the Ant War
I don’t know about your place but in my house I live in a state of constant siege.
You see I am surrounded by vast armies of tiny little ants that seem to sit quietly until a crumb of food hits the floor or gets left on a bench.
At that point they mobilize and within minutes I am being overrun.
The strange thing about these little ants is that they are sensitive to noise or vibration (not sure which) and at the slightest disturbance they scuttle off en masse and are nowhere to be found.
They drive me crazy. Or at least they used to drive me crazy until I started employing some effective natural countermeasures.
The one that worked for me was citrus oil but if you check the article below you will see failing that there are other strategies for getting rid of them.
Vegetarianism is clearly a growing trend in our modern world but as many people will know, just switching off the meat at the drop of a hat can have some serious downside to it.
One of the basic problems with giving up meat is that your body become accustomed to having meat regularly to provide a whole range of nutrients and not just protein for that matter.
Suddenly cutting off that supply and not providing alternatives can have some side effects.
The most common is a sudden drop in energy levels especially when it comes to sustained energy output.
It’s like the body’s batteries go real flat, real fast!
One of the reasons for this is that on a high protein meat diet your body adapts to become what we could call a protien burning engine and that’s where it sources it’s energy.
What you are trying to achieve is the conversion of that protein burning engine to a carb burning engine and at the same time offering a range of vegetable proteins to keep things smoothly running.
The sometimes inevitable result of this conversion is that the person goes overboard on the carbs and begins to pack on weight.
Now the carbs are essential so let’s not forget that but the problem is that you have to change your idea of what is an acceptable carb rather than what are the carbs I know of.
Obesity and Malnutrition
It’s strange to think that when we hear of malnutrition we think of thirld world countries and images of starving children.
However increasingly in developed countries we are seeing dramatically increasing numbers of cases of malnutrition accompanying obesity.
I get so tired of hearing arguments that when someone is obese they are the unfortunate victims of some kind of genetic disorder or “difference” that causes them to be that way.
So we spend millions of dollars off on a wild goose chase to discover some genetic thingy that will make it all better yet at the end of the day it’s not better.
The same goes for the emotional factor in obesity.
Obese people are obese, we know it, they know it and one thing we can be sure of is that they don’t want to be that way.
The emotional factor in all of this is that they have been brainwashed through modern marketing to associate positive feelings with the consumption of usually horrendous food.
They know they shouldn’t but the emotional driving force is too strong for them to resist because they are confronted with a short term “feel good” and the long term “be obese” seems a world away.
So it hardly comes as a surprise that that main condition accompanying obesity is in fact malnutrition and all the associated health problems that come with it.
I am not sure I have the answers to how to fix that problem but the one thing I know that does not help is people like doctors and advertising executives providing people who are obese with reasons and justifications for being that way.
E. coli Warning on Flour
The American Center for Disease Control this week issued a warning on General mills Gold Medal brand flour.
The warning itself is pretty standard and comes after a number of people reported becoming ill after eating products containing that flour and in most cases it was due to the product not being cooked.
A good example is eating leftover cookie dough from the mixing bowl… totally understandable!
Anyway that is what it is but to me this indicates a food system in serious trouble.
Well let’s take a look at it.
The suspicion is that this flour product is contaminated with E. coli bacteria and the facts are that as of writing this there have been 10 cases severe enough to require hospitalization from the 38 original reports.
The thing I find difficult to comprehend is that E. coli has appeared in what is basically a dry process product.
I can understand these types of outbreaks occurring in the processing of vegetable products for packaging due to the use of water for washing etc. and I can understand easily that it could occur in meat based processing, but flour?
There really has to be something seriously compromised in the system when you start to get E. coli outbreaks in dry goods.
Where Your Food Originally Came From
This is an incredibly interesting yet at the same time slightly disturbing article covering the subject of crop diversity and the growth of food globalization.
It’s pretty easy to see that there are many examples of foods that have become synonymous with a particular country’s cuisine that did not actually originate from that country.
We think of the Irish and potatoes yet the potato originated in the Andes. In fact South America was also the source point for chillies yet it is pretty hard to imagine Thai food without it!
Of course as these crops have migrated around the world and been adapted to local growing conditions it has added significant diversity to our diets.
So what’s the disturbing part?
Well there is an agreement in place (actually a treaty) that provides that all donor nations should be providing gene stock of as close to the original plane or crop as they have into one central repository.
The purpose for this is to preserve that gene stock as a safeguard against future dramatic changes in climatic or growing conditions in a given country.
Access to the original stock would provide for the most effective way to redevelop varieties that are suited to the changed conditions.
Makes sense really until the commercial realities kick in.
Unfortunately the majority of nations that are holding that original gene stock or are the source of it have simple failed to comply with the treaty.
The way most of them are looking at it is that if your wheat starts to fail then you will buy our wheat and we can profit.
Sad to see a program with purely altruistic intentions get dragged so low.
