Let the Gluten Wars Begin!
Generally in the weekly tips section of this site I like to do a general roundup of of the various goings on around the internet in the field of health and healthy living.
There is just so much information being churned out each day it is hard to keep up with everything and in the end it feels like you just read a whole bunch of stuff about everything and it all leaves you feeling a little numb.
You only have to go back through the archives of the blog to realize that one of my pet interests is that of food production itself rather than any specific kind of diet or eating and exercise regime.
I truly believe that there is no need for extreme diets or extreme exercise routines to maintain health.
Moreover I think that the real answer to all of the things that are giving us trouble these days come from a particular source and it really doesn’t take much effort to work it out.
One of the greatest problems we face is that of information being released into the world without full explanation or full research being done and the effects of it can be devastating.
The whole thing regarding the MMR vaccinations causing autism is a perfect example of this.
A flawed study was erroneously released and by being published appeared to be condoned by the British Medical Journal.
The world got wind of it and before you know it vaccination levels began to drop.
In the meantime real researchers actually following the correct protocols of scientific research produced findings after findings that showed the original study to be false.
Investigation into that original study uncovered fraudulent behavior on the part of the person who released it but because it took almost 12 years for the real scientists to be able to confidently refute that study by following correct procedures the concept had taken root.
Add to that the emotional factor that autism in children brings to the table and here we are still trying to eradicate that original garbage study.
It is this emotion that creates the problem.
The anti-vaxxers originally quoted the science as their reason for objection. When the science was dis-proven by later and more thorough science and in greater quantity they resisted until the science was overwhelmingly in favor of vaccinations.
At that point they switched from “because of the science” to various conspiracy theories and completely invented delusions of some kind of character assassination carried out on the guy that wrote the original fake paper.
Is Gluten Sensitivity Actually Real?
Currently we have another one on the stove bubbling away all ready to be served up and this time it is going to probably be worse because an industry has grown up around it!
For the past few years there has been a growing movement of people promoting the health benefits of going gluten free.
This push was in a large part due to an Australian study showing that there was such a thing a gluten intolerance outside of the existing known condition of celiac disease.
Celiac disease in itself is a condition where the body has enormous difficulty digesting protein in the form of gluten found in various grain products.
This results in a wide ranging set of symptoms but the bottom line is that it makes people’s lives hell if they have anything containing gluten.
Up until the Australian study, celiac disease sufferers were the only acknowledged group that were understood to have what we call gluten intolerance.
That study identified other people displaying the same symptoms as those with celiac disease and ultimately it was assumed that there definitely was a form of gluten intolerance outside of the celiac disease group.
However the original researchers that undertook that study felt somewhat troubled by the results and had genuine concerns about exactly how accurately the study was done and just how bullet proof the conclusions were.
(*Note: In the meantime a worldwide movement of people has grown solely based on this idea that there is such a thing as gluten intolerance and a gluten free diet is the answer.)
So in order to really get into the subject they began a larger study that was far more complex in its parameters in order to be absolutely sure that what they found was not the result of some random or unseen cause.
To put it in a nutshell what they found was that there is no such thing as gluten intolerance outside of the known condition of celiac disease.
How can they be so sure?
Well you can click the link below to read the full report but it comes down to this:
They put a large study group of people on to strictly controlled diets that contained no other known irritants of the condition.
They only used people who has been diagnosed as having gluten intolerance based on the original study.
Some were given high gluten diets, some were given low gluten diets and the rest were giving gluten free diets in a scientifically standard blind study.
ALL the participants reported the continuation of their existing symptoms regardless of what level of gluten the were being given.
In other words the presence of gluten was eliminated completely as a factor in causing the symptoms they were suffering from.
The bottom line is that there are a set of symptoms floating around quite commonly that a number of people suffer from which were incorrectly attributed to a condition called gluten intolerance.
That information has been proven to be wrong by the exact same people that established it in the first place. That’s the science, now let’s see how long it takes for the conspiracy theories to begin!
