I must admit I had mixed emotions about this one! I quite like a tequila every now and then and the recent reports that it helps maintain healthy bone structure and growth was right up there with my favourite articles!
Unfortunately over on the Harvard Health Blog they felt it was necessary absolutely poop the party by introducing some rather silly old concepts like, science, facts, logic and all that other stuff designed to kill the joy!
However there was one part of this that I found particularly interesting as illustrated by the quote below:
“The researchers suggested that sugars in the agave tequilana interacted with bacteria in the intestinal tracts of the mice to encourage absorption of minerals needed to build bones. So, a “healthy intestinal microbiome” may also be required for this approach to work.”
So here we have it again, that pesky microbiome. I am beginning to think that there is a possibility that just about everything that ever went wrong with anyone at any point in time was due in some to a problem with the microbiome!
OK, maybe that’s overstating it a little.
What a Friend We have in Cheeses!
The video below gives a great explanation of exactly what cheese is and how it was evolved.
To me the important point of all of this is to bear in mind that when products like cheese are being recommended as important parts of our diets it is equally important to consider the source of that product and how it has been produced.
Cheese may be our friend but bear in mind that from a nutritional point of view, not all cheeses were created equal.
Yes to Vitamin D3 (and to a little common sense)
I am including a link to the article below this week because it ties in with a lot of recent research regarding the state of the average person’s gut microbiome and their overall health.
If you are new to this subject it really does bear looking into as scientists may just have finally locked on to the real cause of many of the ailments we suffer in this modern world.
Poor health of the microbiome has been linked to a wide range of complains from gluten intolerance all the way through to autism.
Essentially the data so far seems to strongly indicate that an abundance of friendly bacteria in the upper intestinal tract and an abundance in the diversity of that bacteria can lead to some pretty remarkable improvements in overall health.
The best explanation of it I have read so far suggests that these bacteria are capable of producing chemicals vital to normal operation of the body which have been for years overlooked.
The reason for that is that the amounts of these substances is so microscopic that it was never suspected in the first place.
However what appears to be the situation is that even though the bacteria are producing these elements in microscopic quantities the resulting effects on the body can be rather dramatic.
Having said this bear in mind the study being referred to on the use of Vitamin D to increase the bacterial numbers is not a reason to nuts on taking vitamin D.
The real core question to ask is how did the average person’s vitamin D levels drop to the point of needing a supplement in the first place?
Of course this will inevitably lead you back to the supermarket where par for the course are products that have been processed within an inch of their lives resulting in nutritional loss.
So instead of scarfing down bottles of vitamin D or running to the doctor for a shot, just source some vitamin d rich foods and get them into your diet.

What Your Poop Says About You (For Serious)
A while back now I was talking to a friend of mine who also happens to be one of those old fashioned and fast disappearing local family type doctors.
He told me that at a rough estimate he would say that 90% of his patients regardless of age had trouble with bowel movements.
Does that not tell you something about how we are living our lives when we can’t even take a decent c*^p anymore!
Beware the TTIP
Just in case anyone was thinking that the current bad news all around the world (whatever it happens to be at the moment) seemed to have gotten worse, bear in mind what they are not wanting you to look at.
The raft of international trade agreement that are being secretly negotiate (on your behalf?) are still ongoing.
This issue has not died,
it has just moved out of the news cycle.
So just in case you were wondering, no, it hasn’t gotten any better and yes, it is big business as usual.
If you think you live in any kind of free or democratic society, and you like that idea, you really need to keep your eye on this one.
The U.S. in particular are pushing very hard to keep this as a way of businesses finally taking over final say on Government policy especially in the fields of public health, food production and food safety.
This is NOT a chicken little “the sky is falling” situation.
This may be your last chance.
To get a sense of what is going on read the European proposals that include concepts of cultural difference, sovereignty and the rights of the government to decide best for their populations.
On the other hand the U.S. position on the same subject mentions nothing of these concepts and only seeks to protect business.
Natural Menopause Tips
With the current atmosphere in the world where just about every type of non-optimum situation with regards to our bodies is dealt with medically it seems appropriate to take a step back for a moment.
There are numerous perfectly natural, yet at the same time quite uncomfortable body situations that will occur over our lives.
The tendency these days seems to be to immediately seek some kind of medical intervention whether it be to completely stop the process or eradicate the associated discomfort.
From the medicos point of view there is also a seemingly gleeful enthusiasm about interfering at the drop of a hat. So what’s the deal here?
I can remember when my wife was pregnant and we went for the first time to see our family GP.
We announced we were pregnant.
He told us that was great.
This was followed by a long silence.
I then asked well weren’t we supposed to do something?
He laughed and said he could impress us by calculating just how far along we were but that was about it.
I was kind of surprised.
He (being a pretty cool Doctor) went on the explain that pregnancy was a natural bodily process and the body will do what the body will do.
Any problems or questions, just give him a call.
What he said next was the real eye opener.
He went on toe explain that within the medical field most doctors dealing with a pregnancy would search carefully for any kind of non-optimum situation with that pregnancy and literally take it over.
The reason for this is that in medicine the highest premiums paid to insurance companies for malpractice was the filed of childbirth.
Because of that most doctors sought to intervene as soon as possible to turn a natural process into a medical procedure that they could control all the way through to the end.
And that was the only reason.
Another field in which the medical profession has been begged to intervene has been that of menopause.
And let’s face it, some of those interventions in the past have been pretty dire!
What we are looking at here is a natural process and the real question has to be why has this natural process become so diabolically uncomfortable.
Yes, you can trounce a lot of the symptoms with medications but why has it become this way?
Personally I think that these later life events especially in the area of hormonal interaction are the price we are paying for our diets and lifestyles having become so compromised.
It’s like a lifetime of setting yourself up for disaster.
So if you are a young woman now is the time to treat your menopause with healthy living and good food.
If your past that point then below is a link to a list of things that can greatly improve your chances of reducing those symptoms.
