What’s the Deal with Acne?
Although every week I post an update on the general world of health, nutrition and the ever degrading state of our food supply, the actual theme of this site is acne.
Part of the reason it has drifted over the years is that my original idea for publishing this site was to gather together in one place as much information on acne as I could.
Having a brother that suffered from terrible acne and then eventually a son who had the same problem I could see first hand the personal trauma it was causing.
You see most people who do not have acne assume that it is the acne itself that is the source of trouble. In fact even the most horrendous outbreak is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to tallying up the effects.
The real damage being done is to the person’s self esteem and confidence.
Let’s face it, this world is so fixated on appearance and the need to be perceived as “normal” is overwhelming.
When you match all that up with the inevitable insecurities of your average teenager it is a recipe for personal disaster.
That’s the story of how we got to this place today!
The reason I stopped adding more information on acne was pretty simple.
There was no more information to add!
If you research the subject enough it is easy to tell when you have researched it enough and there is no more that really needs to be added.
That point is when you start circling around and around seemingly going nowhere or at least nowhere new.
Once I hit that point the only other question for me was why does there seems to be an unending supply of information?
The answer to that can be summed up in one word, money!
Drug and pharmaceutical companies, cosmetic companies, doctors, health food manufacturers and even snake oil salesmen all have a vested interest in keeping these waters as muddy as they possibly can.
And they do it by constantly reissuing, reworking and re-releasing apparent “new information” on a subject that is in my mind, done and dusted.
So what’s the big secret? Simple really.
You have a finite number of factors in play with any case of acne.
They are, genetics, hormones, food tolerances, diet specifically and in general and stress levels.
That’s the whole deal right there.
The reason the subject is easy to exploit is that there is no cure for acne.
There is only a cure for YOUR acne or Joe’s acne or Mary’s acne because all or some of those main factors are in motion and for every person the solution will be found based on the WAY those factors are in motion.
For some it may be more diet than hormones and for others it will be a totally different balance between them.
There is no one size fits all solution just a size that fits you.
The Real Deal on Bulking Up
In a world that I think seems to have gone just all out crazy on the subject of bodies I think this article is a timely reminder for gym junkies everywhere.
One aspect of the fitness industry that attracts a lot of negative attention is that of bodybuilding.
My own experience of it seems to support what is in the article and I think it is very relevant today.
In my former life I ran nightclubs.
Mostly they were live music venues but were, at the the time, considered to be a bit notorious.
One inevitable aspect of these types of operations was the need to employ guys at the front door for security purposes and just as inevitably those guys were gym junkies of at least some type.
It was the bodybuilders that interested me the most because although their sheer size was provided great discouragement to those wanting to cause trouble, they were largely useless when there was trouble!
Some of the more extreme examples couldn’t actually walk properly let alone run if necessary and I had the opportunity to see them more than once in a fight.
It was like watching the Michelin Man trying to swing at someone without having elbows!
The closest I have seen to the action since is watching people in inflatable fat suits trying to fight each other!
They other thing that stuck me was that in general, they just weren’t happy.
They always seemed to be just miserable and depending on where they were in their steroid cycle could be just a tad psychotic as well.
This Won’t End Well
They just can’t seem to get anything right these days!
I find it amazing that their own Government can sink one billion dollars into this money pit and for some reason the citizens still cling to the hope that in some way it is going to help.
All you have to do is read it all through very carefully and all you will find is a backdoor income stream for some big business interest somewhere.
I think the people of the US really need to WTFU and realize their precious democracy disappeared many years ago and they really should stop electing unacceptable Governments because the alternative was more distasteful.
Infinite Ability to Get it Wrong
I am linking to this article on Science Daily because it has all the hallmarks of exactly where we are and how far off the tracks we have become.
The article itself goes on about how scientists are beginning to home in on the gene that causes in some of us the desire to drink alcohol. Seriously?
Can you imaging the millions and millions of dollars being funnelled into this and all for the sake of “curing” the tendency to drink alcohol.
This goes to what is wrong with the world in general. It is a validation of a state of personal irresponsibility for one’s actions. Yes, people have problems with alcohol and yes, they should be helped.
So to do that all you have to do if find out why they are seeking escape through the use of alcohol and then help them overcome that problem.
The crazy part of it all is that when any kind of counselling is suggested as a solution the cry from all sides is that it is too expensive.
Yet at the same time billions go into research like this without anyone batting an eyelid. Sheesh!
Eye Gunk Facts
OK so when I first saw this one I though cool! Here’s a new bodily excretion thing I can learn and you know you just can’t learn enough about bodily excretions!
Unfortunately it all turned out to be a bit of a fizzer really.
For example excessive eye gunk may indicate you have a cold… really?
I actually don’t need to monitor my eye gunk to know if I have a cold, generally speaking the coughing, wheezing, runny nose, sore throat stuff reveals that to me way before the eye gunk!
Anyway, maybe you might be interested.
Meditation and Exercise
Meditation and exercise lead to less depression, hmmmm. not much of a breakthrough there really!
Exercise is easily explained because it just gets you body working and by “working” I mean functioning.
Most of the processes your body undertakes each day as it is operating actually rely on movement of at least some kind so this one is a no brainer.
Meditation is another kettle of fish altogether.
Most people that engage in meditation on a regular basis show clear results that they are better off for it.
The key to it, and the reason why most fail, is that it has to be done regularly and often.
It has to be an almost daily routine and there is a reason for that.
So in a nutshell and separate from all the tree hugging stuff that meditation types love here’s how it works.
The most common form of meditation and the best one for beginners is meditating on the breath.
That means you get comfy, in a relaxing place where you won’t easily get distracted, close your eyes and place your attention on your own breath.
Some people will go into all sorts of crap about the breath and breathing techniques or whatever but really, it’s simple, just meditate on your own breath doing nothing else.
This is an exercise in discipline and what you are trying to do is stop thinking in an uncontrolled manner about all the rubbish in your life.
So, you find something that you can keep coming back to that is always there… you own breathing.
If you drift off and come back to the breath and it is not there, mediation can’t help you because you are already dead.
So, you inevitably drift off and come back to the breath and off and back until you begin to find you are drifting off less and less.
Why the breath?
It is reliable.
It is always there and it has one vital characteristic, it is always in present time.
You don’t come back and put your attention on the breath you just had, you put it on to the one now, and now and now.
Keep this up for long enough and often enough and after a while something interesting happens.
You more and more stay in the present and after even more time the habit of drifting off in life to past garbage reduces and you naturally begin to stay in the present moment.
This results in less stress and less tendency to connect to past upsets, failures etc.
Simple. Do it.
